Gadgets of the Month

As featured in the March issue of FEAST Magazine … and on our website, here are two great kitchen tools recommendations  (Gadgets of the Month) this month.
You can buy them on our website – click here!

Norpro Butter KeeperSpread your butter with ease with the Norpro Butter Keeper. This porcelain crock defies gravity as it stores your butter on the counter just the way that Granny did. It can hold a full stick of butter and keep it without refrigeration for a month. With just a little bit of water to seal the edges, the butter keeper provides fresh, spreadable butter. Mmmmmm…

Onion GogglesGrill or chop like a pro with these RSVP Onion and Grilling Goggles.  With anti-fog lenses and a foam seal, these goggles offer protection from the tears of onion chopping and grill smoke. And with a variety of colors available, they just look cool!  (Our Main Dish, Laura Laiben, says her boyfriend uses them for woodworking also!  Go figure!)

FRED & FRIENDS CITRUS SAW

In addition to being a cute little replica of a manly saw, this gadget has a dual purpose for your bar – it offers both a bottle opener and a citrus cutter. It’s a handy size to take along to any party or tailgate! Father’s Day is not that far away.  This would make a sweet little gift for your favorite manly man … who drinks cocktails made with citrus.  Real men do that you know.    (Click here to order on our website.)

BROWN SUGAR KEEPER

Here’s a simple answer to the age-old issue of brown sugar becoming hard as a rock in your cabinet.  This sweet little clay figure. We have them in Gingerbread, Teddy Bear and Leaf shapes.

Simply soak in water for about 20 minutes and stick it in with your brown sugar and it will stay moist for over 3 months!  Also works well with cookies, marshmallows and even dried fruit.  Rinse and reuse again and again. (Click here to order on our website.)

SpreadTHAT! BUTTER KNIFE

Magic is alive and well in this revolutionary little knife! Using a cutting-edge design and made from thermal conductive titanium that transmits heat from your hand to the blade of the knife (ok so there IS science to support the magic), this lightweight knife will make spreading cold butter straight from the frig a breeze. Makes a great party trick too when you use it to cut straight through an ice-cube. I’m just sayin…   (Click here to order on our website.)

JOIE – DEVIL OVEN PULL

What a hot little invention that makes pulling out and pushing in those hot oven racks devilishly easy!  Made of heat tolerant silicone, this handy little utensil adds a whimsical touch to a potentially dangerous situation.  Just hook the little devil on the oven rack and keep your digits cool.  Great for miniature “kitchen devils” learning to cook.  A perfect “non-candy” Halloween treat for their candy sacks too!  (Great idea huh?  You’re welcome.)

Charles Viancin – Steamer/Colander

It’s really not only for cabbage… it’s just shaped like it.  Another product in the long line of temperature-resistant silicone kitchen helpers. What makes this item different, however, are the built in handles which allow you to steam, cook or reheat in it, and then just pick it up to remove it from the hot pan or oven.  Generous size to make it practical as a colander as well. Rolls up for efficient storage.  She’s a keeper!

Microplane has done it again. They have created a cutting utensil, the Microplane Spiral Cutter, that actually maintains an edge, primarily because the blades are made of surgical grade stainless steel. This time it’s for the popular spiral cuts of vegetables that are perfect for veggie pastas and salads.  We believe that this little baby is worth the drawer space.

Kolder Salad Dressing MixerThe Kolder Salad Dressing Mixer is an item that we recommend over and over here at The Culinary Center of Kansas City as it doubles as a mini cooking classes on various styles of vinaigrette.

Stamped on the sides of this clear shaker bottle are the measurements for Honey Mustard Dressing, Greek Dressing, Caesar and more.  Just fill with the identified ingredients to the lines indicated, then shake.  The next time around substitute another variety of oil, vinegar, citrus juice, etc. and make it your own.

Voila!  A cooking class in a bottle!

How many salt and pepper grinders do you have to go through to finally decide that you need to just go ahead and bite the bullet and purchase a “good” set?!  Well, when you do make that decision, we would like to suggest that you take a look at Cole & Mason’s Salt and Pepper grinder set.

An elegant and sleek design mix of stainless steel and acrylic, the mechanisms in each (carbon steel in the pepper mill and ceramic in the salt mill) are guaranteed for life.  (That’s a long time folks!) You can even choose your grind preference.

This set might just be your new “go to” wedding gift.

Burger flipping just became a sport with this perfectly crafted heavy duty spatula. The World’s Greatest Slotted Burger Turner/Flipper/Spatula is made of manly 18/8 stainless steel with a non-slip heat resistant handle and is completely dishwasher safe.  (Note to burger flipper…your hand is NOT heat resistant, so you still have to be careful.)

I would suggest throwing out all other gadgets in your kitchen drawers posing as burger flippers.  This one is the real deal.  Makes for a good spanking tool too, if you are into that sort of thing.
