A Relic of the Midwest TropicsSeptember 14, 2015
Did you know that the Midwest U.S., waaaaaaay back in the day, used to have a tropical climate? (We’re talking a long, long, long time ago.) We don’t see many traces of it these days, but did you know that one tropical fruit still grows here?
Farmer Steve brought some paw paws with him last week. There are actually several varieties of this little-known fruit. It’s not the most attractive one at first glance – it looks like a potato. It has a yellowish-green skin, and a soft, orange custard-like inside. There’s not a LOT of that ‘meat’ inside, but what there is has a sweet flavor something like a cross between banana and mango.
